The Audain Art Museum’s Permanent Collection of nearly 200 works of art is a visual journey through the history of art from coastal British Columbia. Spanning from the 18th century to present day, the Collection contains one of the world’s finest collections of Northwest Coast First Nations masks; a large collection of works by Emily Carr, encompassing all periods of her artistic career…
Hi pirkkotervo! Emily Carr admired the First Nations culture and painted scenes in the First Nations villages (native people of British Columbia and the North West Canadian coast). She even lived among them for a time, which upset her ‘proper’ family and the Victorian settlers of her town. I think the ‘War Canoes’ were a part of First Nations native culture and history which she wanted to honor and preserve by painting. Neither the First Nations people nor the British-descended settlers, however, entirely approved of her actions. I think her heart was in the right place, but she was an outsider in both societies, unfortunately. If this does not answer your question, please ask again. I appreciate your visit and your interest in this painting. 😎
