Morning has broken, like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for the springing fresh from the world
Sweet the rain’s new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall, on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass
Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light, eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God’s recreation of the new day
Eleanor Farjeon, 1931

I think I’ve always believed Cat Stevens wrote “Morning Has Broken,” and I imagine other people assume that, too. Your credit at the end led me to an article about the song and another about Eleanor Farjeon, who wrote the words and who died at the age of 84 six years before Cat Stevens recorded his version.

Eleanor Farjeon also wrote the lyrics to my favorite Advent hymn: “People, Look East”.

Thanks for this beautiful Cat Stevens version of “Morning Has Broken”. I will use it in a couple of weeks in a Contemplative Class that I facilitate on Sunday mornings. It was beautiful and a reminder of how nature can draw us into a quiet ecstasy. Peace, LaMon

I played this song each morning during the first scary weeks of the Covid pandemic.
Have you seen his children’s book, just published in 2021, based on his song, Peace Train?
