Trio Medici: Notturno D897 (Schubert)

František Kupka (1871-1957), Formes allongées, signé ‘Kupka’ (en bas à gauche), huile sur toile, 65.2 x 71 cm., Peint vers 1912-14, Image Source: Christie’s

Kupka’s driving passion was to investigate the phenomena of vision...Kupka’s experiments in the field of perception centered around how a fleeting image could nevertheless create a sense of emotion within the consciousness:
“The vertical is the solemn spinal column of life, the central axis of all constructions. Have you ever experienced the sensation of a vertical intruding into your field of vision against your will? It might be the shadow of an eyelash falling upon the outer surface of the eye. When a vertical falls from above onto the edge of a horizontal, this is a true event.” (quoted in S. Fauchereau, Kupka, Barcelone, 1981, p. 16).With its carefully synthesiced palette resonating across the undulating surface of verticals, Formes allongées constitutes a prime example of Kupka’s mystical, visionary pictorial investigations and illustrates why the artist is considered one of the forefathers of abstraction alongside Piet Mondrian and Vassily Kandinsky.
