  1. O’Keeffe is so associated with the New Mexico desert that I don’t think about her connection to the sea.

    I’m astonished by the variety of O’Keeffe’s themes that you’re turning up for us. I never would have associated her with waves; she’s so often associated with her flowers, or the collections of rocks, feathers, and leaves she assembled in the southwest, it never occurred to me that she might have done a wave. It’s a beautiful painting.

      I wondered where she was in 1922, when this was painted. Lake George! There are a lot of interesting paintings from that period, like this one.
