  3. Simon and Garfunkel recorded on the Columbia record label. Garfunkel and I were (independently) both students at Columbia University. I saw many things written on subway walls.

Our psychic bond flows two ways, my dear ~ you keep finding music highly significant to my past… “Sounds of Silence” was the first song I ever performed for an audience, right up the road from here in Lakewood, Colorado.

I was a skinny, geeky, two years underaged seventh grader with buck teeth, the worst of haircuts, terminal collar-to-hairline acne, and out of fashion clothing. My audience of 1500 had been both let out of class for the event and required to attend it. As I ranked in the shortlist of schoolwide scapegoats, you can imagine the noise level in that room.

    I sang.

Somewhere after the first couple of lines, I checked out. My body, animated by the spirit of the song, performed all the verses ~ I found myself sliding back in a couple of lines before its end.

I found that I was singing to an absolutely silent room. When I finished there was that moment of silence which I have learned since that every performer treasures above emeralds. Then they clapped. And cheered.

Backstage, my music teacher told me with tears in his eyes that if he’d had one tenth of that courage he’d have been professional.

Next day, everything in the student body went pretty much back to the way it had always been.

Since then I’ve performed at museums, galleries, restaurants, openings, fundraisers and political events all across our nation ~ but that was the first

    Thanks for the memories!

    1. My dear Ana, that is an amazing memory to treasure always, and you are so kind to share it here. Thank you! I can picture you facing that crowd and prevailing with a mesmerizing performance that produced that moment that “every performer treasures above emeralds.” And you were so young and brave! I will think of you every time I replay this song. 🙂❤️❤️❤️🌺🙏

  7. Good day to you! 🙂 I am catching up after a very busy couple of days. I always love this song – especially by Simon & Garfunkle. I was just a small child when it came out, but I remember hearing it even back then and have enjoyed it ever since. If you ever have the chance, look it up by the band Disturbed on YouTube. I am typically not a big heavy metal fan, but their rendition of this song sends chills down your spine. His voice is incredible. I really think it will touch you. The painting is bold and expressive, too. Thank you for the post.
