Graham Sutherland: “I don’t paint pretty pictures.”
I’m not familiar with this study only with the magnificent finished portrait of Churchill by Sutherland that Churchill destroyed/vandalised. Sutherland also designed the tapestry in Coventry Cathedral for which he made hundreds if not thousands of studies. Coventry was blitzed by German bombers during the war and in reprisal Churchill ordered the total destruction of Dresden. Horrendous stuff!
