“Agostina’s Eyes” by Remko Kühne

Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853 – 1890), Agostina Segatori in Le Tambourin, January-March 1887, oil on canvas, 55.5 cm x 47 cm, Credits: Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (Vincent van Gogh Foundation)

What do you hear when you see a painting of Van Gogh?

What inspired Remko Kühne?

Remko: “I feel for this lady, she’s been spreading joy for so many people, with her café, but there’s so much loneliness in her eyes. In the painting you can see she tries to stay strong and proud, but in the end she even lost her beautiful café…it’s a very sad story.”

The offset eyes give her face a most unique look.

    1. I have wondered about that, Dwight. Perhaps she suffered from a stroke (?) since this was later in her life. The portrait of Agostina by Corot in 1866 looks much different. (at NGA: https://www.nga.gov/collection/art-object-page.46583.html#provenance)
