Justin Johnson: One Horse Town

“The Skagen painters were a group of Danish and Scandinavian painters who gathered each summer in the small fishing village of Skagen, on Denmark’s northernmost tip, from the early 1870s to the turn of the 20th century…Influenced by French Impressionism and the Realist tendencies of the Barbizon school, the Skagen painters were drawn to the region’s light, sea and natural beauty. Like their French counterparts…the Skagen painters focused on realistic scenes of everyday life. Their subjects ranged from the local fisherman and children playing at the water’s edge to festive events in the colony.

They favoured painting en plein air and experimented with loose brushstrokes to capture the effects of light and colour at different times of day…Among the best-known artists in the colony at Skagen were the Danish painters Peder Severin Krøyer, Michael Ancher, Laurits Tuxen, Anna Ancher and Marie Krøyer; the Norwegian Christian Krohg; and the Swede Oscar Björck.”
