“The present work was originally donated by Henri Le Sidaner to a tombola to raise funds for the establishment of a memorial to his friend, the Belgian painter at the forefront of Luminism Emile Claus. The two met when Claus rented a studio in Paris after 1889 and was introduced to Le Sidaner, prompting a lifelong friendship of mutual artistic admiration. The memorial was executed by the Belgian artist and sculptor Georges Minne and raised at the Villa Zonneschijn, Claus’ house in Astene just outside the city of Ghent. At the time, Belgium was at the forefront of artistic exchanges also due to its geographical location, witnessing the preeminence of Symbolist art and Le Sidaner made various visits to Bruges in 1898 and 1899-1900.”
