Cabinet of Curiosities in Paint
Often produced as pendants, Jan van Kessel’s detailed depictions of insects, flowers and plants were sought after by collectors. They should be seen in the context of cabinets of curiosities.
Van Kessel belonged to a famous dynasty of painters and is indebted in style and technique to his grandfather, Jan Brueghel the Elder, and his uncles, Jan Brueghel the Younger, and David Teniers the Younger.

I love bugs, and these are wonderful pictures. He certainly has illustrious relatives. I also love the phrase “Creeping Thistle and Borage.” I wish I could paint something worthy of that title! Any plant that creeps is a friend of mine. 🙂

It is quite descriptive title…..this comment is showing up twice so I will answer twice, especially since I do not see my previous comment ….hmmmm….more gremlins.

Gremlins at my end, too. I recall my iPad seeming to gag in sending the reply so I probably repeated the send. Forgive any duplications that arise! You’re very courteous.
