“The secret of my best work is that it is Mexican.”
Diego Rivera

“I know now that he who hopes to be universal in his art must plant in his own soil. Great art is like a tree, which grows in a particular place and has a trunk, leaves, blossoms, boughs, fruit, and roots of its own. The more native art is, the more it belongs to the entire world, because taste is rooted in nature. When art is true, it is one with nature. This is the secret of primitive art and also of the art of the masters—Michelangelo, Cézanne, Seurat, and Renoir...”

I am always surprised at the work around 1914…the “great war” (and events leading up to it) must have been a shattering experience for all around, manifest in this work and the works of Braque, Picasso, etc…. I can especially see it in this painting Cubism, I realize, began slightly earlier, and I would like to really know how the world was thinking — breaking apart all the old assumptions and examining anew..

Similar thoughts run through my mind, and I read as much history as art on most days. The fascination never ceases.
OH!! – that reminds me!!! I found your book about baseball and it is AWESOME!. It brought back so many memories of growing up…. my brothers lived at the field. LOVE the book – both text and illustrations are quite special. Congratulations!! ❤️👍😎
