At Sunnyside - Where Truth and Beauty Meet 
This is so beautiful. The detail is wonderful … the patina of the table … and the lady’s gown – It looks like it has a muslin overlay … and those roses. Can you imagine having a garden full of them! While I love the detail, it’s not pseudo-photographic like those ghastly pre-Raphaelite paintings (can you tell I dislike pre-Raphaelite?). I wonder what she’s looking at from her seat at the window. There’s something intriguing about the way her hands are resting in her lap, with palms upwards.

Good morning, ellem! 🙂 Please forgive my tardy response. Reading your reaction to this painting makes me smile. We could be looking through the same eyes. Those are all reasons I love this painting. You even noticed those upturned hands…I wonder what a body language specialist would say about her slightly slumping posture? Is she sad and resigned?… fatigued or ill? …waiting for a loved one to return?.. or simply at peace with the new spring morning that engulfs her? I have no more information about the circumstances of the painting, but I want to believe the latter explanation. I wonder what is on the small table beside her – an open letter, sewing, overdue bills….? I returned to the clips and magnified further, but still I cannot identify anything.
The types of paintings I really cannot stand – apart from the vulgar or cruel – are those sickly sweet genre paintings in which every face of a woman, child or animal is a cherubic idealized and formulaic representation of a commercially successful style popular in the early 20th century. It makes my skin crawl – I don’t know why. 🤭

Oooo, sorry to take so long in replying – I haven’t been online for a few days. I think she’s enjoying a few moments of peace too. It looks like she’s possibly been writing something (the book and pen on the table beside her) but is finding it difficult to concentrate for too long … so maybe she is thinking of an absent lover. Thinking about it, her hands look a bit like they do in some meditation poses, so that could be telling us that she’s simply gazing out of the window and emptying her mind … which is a long-winded way of what you said about her ‘being at peace with the new spring morning’. 😀
