Diego Rivera: Paisaje (1919)

Diego Rivera (1886-1957), Paisaje, signed ‘Rivera’ (lower left) indistinctly inscribed (on the reverse), oil on canvas, 12 5/8 x 9 ½ in. (32.1 x 24.1 cm.), Painted circa 1919, Image Source: Christie’s

. “…my Cubist paintings are my most Mexican. Inside them there are plastic qualities—certain specific ways of expressing proportion and space, certain special and personal theories and practices and use of color—that are my own invention and belong to me.” (4) Rivera’s paintings stand on their own; they synthesize European artistic convention with issues of personal iconography, aesthetics, and natural cultural identity. Rivera’s “…finest Cubist paintings are singular, personal statements that could never be mistaken for those by another artist.” (5)”

Thank you, Sunny, for the introduction to Diego Rivera, not, in particular, great, in my humble view.

PS. When Felicity allowed, I listen to the piano concertos, and was delighted to find my beloved Mozart! Thank you!!

    1. Rivera is not among my favorites, but that may be more about his character than his art, which I admittedly have only recently started learning about. He does seem to have been an unpleasant person. On the other hand, I send my very best regards to Felicity this morning (evening!) for allowing Mozart to brighten your day! lol 😎🌺

You mind find this presumptions but one of my paintings was bought by a visitor from Singapore and I was paid a few thousand pounds for it! Ok, not millions but still satisfying, also, I had a few exhibitions and sold many more. My walls a covered by paintings and murals, and visitors remark that my house is beautiful.

  4. I’m not able to distinguish Diego Rivera’s Cubist paintings from those of other Cubists.

    1. I keep looking at it and trying to understand what about it makes the painting Rivera’s “most Mexican.” (?) Call me clueless….

Not a favourite of mine, but it was Frida Kahlo who sought him out and encouraged her to continue painting. They say that in his day, Rivera was as famous Picasso, but he’s still not a favourite!

Bellissimo.

    1. google translate: “Beautiful. I don’t make an effort to understand a work of art, I’m not interested in the meaning or the message, if I like it it’s beautiful, and that’s enough for me. In this work there is a perfect balance of shapes and colors and I am fine with it. On the other hand it must be said that in the world the thing that hears the most nonsense said is a painting hanging on the wall of a museum.” Thanks for sharing your thoughts, gialloesse. I agree: “se mi piace é bella” 👍👍😎
