Harold Knight: Alfred Munnings Reading

Harold Knight (British, 1874 – 1961 ), Alfred Munnings Reading (c.1910), Oil on canvas: 40 x 30 (in) / 101.6 x 76.2 (cm), Image Source: Richard Green Gallery

“The recent discovery of Harold Knight’s Alfred Munnings Reading…sheds new light on a fascinating moment in the early careers of both artist and sitter. When embarking on her ballet picture, Carnaval…, for reasons that remain obscure, Laura Knight selected a canvas which was stretched on top of a work by her husband, and only when this was recently removed was the portrait of fellow-artist, Alfred Munnings, revealed for the first time.”

  2. Dee says:

Upon viewing Alfred Munnings Reading, it occurred to me that when artists choose human subjects to paint, they more frequently choose females as their subjects. Exception is paintings of royalty, prominent politicians and the wealthy.

Am I correct in that observation, or is my lack of formal schooling in the fine arts just too limited to make that statement?

    1. I have wondered the same thing, Dee. Perhaps my personal taste gets in the way of appreciating more male portraits, since I tend to gravitate toward color and light. Interesting question!
