Who Is Wilhelm Wachtel?

According to Leo Baeck Institute Art and Objects:

Wilhelm Wachtel was a Jewish-Polish realist painter and illustrator. Born in Lviv,[Ukraine], he studied at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts under Leon Wyczółkowski and Leopold Löffler, and then the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Nikolaus Gysisa.

He traveled to Vienna, Paris, and Palestine. He often depicted scenes of Jewish life and topics, and was featured in a number of exhibits. He settled in Palestine in 1936, but emigrated to the United States after the start of World War II. Unfortunately, many of his works were lost during that time.

“King Solomon is often portrayed in similar dress and headgear in Old Master and nineteenth century paintings. His famous gardens, with all kinds of fruit trees, is mentioned in the Old Testament.” Sotheby’s,
