    The word ‘wain’ immediately brought the name ‘wainwright’ to mind; I found it’s another of those names that reflect a trade. ‘Wain’ is an archaic word for wagon, and of course a ‘wright’ is a maker: shipwright, wheelwright, playwright, and such.

  3. “Wain” is the native English version of “wagon,” which English borrowed from Dutch. The borrowed version eventually drove out the native one.

      1. Etymology elucidates yet again. Now you also know that a distant ancestor of someone born with the family name Wainwright was a maker and repairer of wagons.
