O’Keeffe collected organic souvenirs, from stones and shells to feathers and bones, and at Lake George she delighted in gathering leaves that appealed to her for the striking diversity of their shape and coloring… Autumn Leaves, Lake George, presents a bed of overlapping oak leaves whose forms are isolated and details magnified, drawing attention to the patches of summer’s green that cling to the fiery reds and golden hues of fall, O’Keeffe’s favorite season in the Adirondacks. She created twenty-nine leaf pictures between 1922 and 1931, all based on the leaves she collected at Lake George.

That apostrophe was robotic, not human…

I misused affect/effect in writing yesterday and didn’t catch it until after sending the document. I am (still) mortified…but a quick edit on that apostrophe made me feel better. 😎

A beautiful painting, which I’d never seen. I’ve yet to come across any of her ‘Lake George paintings’ that I don’t like.

You don’t know how I have missed you and your beautiful breaks you allow me in the afternoon, Sunnyside. I am not acquainted as I should be with O’Keeffe. Did she do other paintings during this time?

Revisiting your post this morning, it strikes me again that her Adirondack leaf series is so under-appreciated. There’s also a number of wonderful portraits of her at Lake George, photographs taken by husband Alfred Stieglitz. Thanks for all your great posts 🍁

My pleasure, John! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I have wondered how many more of O’Keeffe’s Lake George and Adirondack leaf series might be in private collections. It is like finding a treasure when I run across a new one. 🙂

Agree — they would make a wonderful topic for a show, or at least a book.
