John Constable (British, 1776–1837), The Hay Wain (Landscape: Noon), 1821, oil on canvas, 130.2 x 185.4 cm (The National Gallery, London). Speakers: Dr. Steven Zucker and Dr. Beth Harris
The word ‘wain’ immediately brought the name ‘wainwright’ to mind; I found it’s another of those names that reflect a trade. ‘Wain’ is an archaic word for wagon, and of course a ‘wright’ is a maker: shipwright, wheelwright, playwright, and such.
Etymology elucidates yet again. Now you also know that a distant ancestor of someone born with the family name Wainwright was a maker and repairer of wagons.
Haying just seems to be a perpetual theme for painters, does it not? Well, not any more, of course. Little actually beautiful about the way we do things now.

You’re going to have to explain that one to me — I don’t know a thing about Batman, never having seen the films, etc.

“Wain” is the native English version of “wagon,” which English borrowed from Dutch. The borrowed version eventually drove out the native one.
